Nature Photography Opportunities

There are a number of unofficial places around Teesside with Nature Photography opportunities. You will find South Gare or Coatham Marshes on the south side of the River Tees, or North Gare on the other side. There is only one "official site" however, and that is RSPB Saltholme, just to the north of Port Clarence.

There are lakes which are home to water birds throughout the year. Reedbeds welcome Reed and Sedge Warblers during the summer, and there is grassland which entices the Yellow Wagtail to visit, also in the summer. Ponds on the site become the summer homes of dragonfly and their smaller relatives, the damselfly. The Wildflower Garden attracts a variety of insects, including colourful butterflies. There is also the merest chance you might see a Bittern, and Marsh Harriers are regular visitors. There are three hides on the main site at Saltholme, with varying degrees of photographic opportunities.

There is an admission charge to the Saltholme reserve of 3.00 pounds per person (please note other RSPB sites have different rules of admission pricing) unless you are an RSPB member, in which case entry is free. There is no longer free admission if you travel with an RSPB member, unless they are a Life Member and you are the only guest. There is also a hide which is outside of the main site, and therefore free, near the car park.

Connected managerially to the Saltholme reserve, but a little further north on the road to Seaton Carew, a new seal viewing point has been built on the banks of Greatham Creek to the west of the road bridge, to look out over where seals haul out, and this is accessed by a footway from the Tees Nature car park. A saltmarsh has also been created between the Creek and the Tees Nature car park, and this too has a viewing point over the area. The best time to see seals is from three hours before high tide to three hours after. There are a couple of sites on the internet where you can find tide times for Teesmouth.

If you search the internet with “RSPB Saltholme” you will find details of opening times, and address and post code. Saltholme also has a Facebook page.
